My LDS faith and the plan of salvation it taught was the foundation for my entire life. I believed that truth was absolute and that absolute truth was available to anyone humble enough to look for God and hear the words of the prophets and listen to the whispering of the still small voice. I had lived my life by that standard for almost forty years, until I began to notice something, a pattern of scriptures and ideas that didn’t match the doctrine.
There was a philosophical and moral theme running through the foundation of my faith that was completely invisible until I first noticed it. But once I saw it, I couldn’t ignore it. It was a crack in the foundation of the doctrine itself, more troubling than any outside critique. Had I been wrong about my faith my whole life? If the gospel wasn’t true, then what was? And how could I know it? Where would I find happiness and peace?
