The stereotype about believers is that they are anti-reason.
But this isn’t exactly accurate.
When I was a believer, I loved logic and reason.
I loved making connections. I loved the logic of the scriptures and the way this verse connected to that one.
I could see connections everywhere. I loved the way gospel ideas connected to classic literature, to philosophy, to modern science.
Because all truth can be circumscribed into one great whole, I believed that every connection was evidence.
But I was wrong.
Truth is the correspondence of our ideas to reality, not just to one another.
Before we connect an idea to any other idea, we must first discover whether it is true on its own merits.
What I was doing was building a beautiful castle in the air, completely untethered to reality.
