Which prophet was right about prophets?

Bruce R. McConkie said, “Sometimes they [the prophets] err in doctrine.”

His solution to these errors was that “The Lord has given us the Standard Works.”

The standard works are vital to helping us avoid any errors the prophet may make in doctrine.
”They become the standards and rules that govern where doctrine and philosophy are concerned.”

Ezra Taft Benson, on the other hand, taught that to avoid error we should follow the living prophet. In his talk “Fourteen Fundamentals in Following the Prophet,” he taught that “The living prophet is more vital to us than the standard works.”

Which is it? Are the standard works the key, or is the living prophet the key?

If you think about it, the standard works are just supposed to be the words of dead prophets written down. But they give us a standard, something to point to when there are disagreements.
As McConkie said, “If this were not so, we would believe one thing when one man was president of the Church and another thing in the days of his successors.”

Benson wasn’t worried about that. In fact, you could say he considered it a feature and not a bug. #3 of his 14 fundamentals is that “The living prophet is more important to us than a dead prophet.”

“Beware of those who would pit the dead prophets against the living prophets, for the living prophets always take precedence.”

What was Benson’s solution to the problem of prophets being in error?

It was that they won’t be.

#4 of his fundamentals is “The prophet will never lead the Church astray.”

Which prophet do you think was right, or are they both wrong?
